How often should you change/replace the transmission fluid & filter on a '99 S70 8nder normal driving conditions and no towing?

Volvo doesn't use filters on the transmission. It wouldn't hurt to do a drain and fill ,about four quarts , every 20 K

Whenever you do it, you must use either the official Volvo fluid or the Mobil type 3309 fluid unless you want to buy a new transmission some time in the near future.

Check this site http://www.volvospeed.com/volvo_performance.php If your transmission is a 5 speed automatic Yes you must use synthetic fluid .If yours is a four speed Dextron 111 will be OK I have used Dextron111 for many years 176 K on one (now totaled) The other 193K
