Ham Radio Wiring

Post by Ubbm »

I am installing a 2 meter amateur radio in my 850. I need to run wires through the firewall to the battery positive and to the engine block ground/earth. Where is the best place to go through the firewall?

Look around the brake booster. There is already a rubber grommet with multiple size tubes sticking out of it. Remove the grommet and cut off the end of the tube you need to use. Then re install. Make sure fit is tight so you don't let outside air or gasses into the drivers compartment. Armor all or a mix of 1/2 quart water and 4 drops baby shampoo make a great lubricant to help slide the wire through. Dawn or similar dish washing liquid and water can be used as well. Remember the car is galvanized so you will need to find strong grounding points so you don't fry your signal amplifier. A poor ground will directly effect performance and longevity of the unit.

JDS60R,
I really appreciate your professional reply to my question. And "right on". I had seen that tube and wondered what it was (!) but never would have guessed that Volvo would be so considerate. Anyway, it is installed and working. Thanks :)
