89 240 DL troubles at high speeds

When I get my 89 240 DL up to 80 or 85 mph (higher speeds at higher outside temperatures), something starts to whine. It sounds like it's coming from something in the dash board. The noise gets louder and more pronounced as I continue to accelerate. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Not to worry- my wife does the same thing.

If the noise seems to be coming from the dash there is a good chance it is the speedometer head, as the gears age and wear that often can make noise at higher speeds, especially in cold weather.
