cover removal on a '88 740 Door Handle

I have a diagram of the door latch/lock mechanism; and it appears that the bright part of the door handle comes off; which would help get to the nut #34 that secures front bolt #41. Just can't figure out how it comes off. Currently that bolt turns, won't back out; and now know why. If i can get it off,I could save the handle; hopefully.
Also anyone have the connecting rod separate? or experience with what could 'snap' and the handle move but not open the door?
