Service light came on after 82,500 mile service

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Service light came on after 82,500 mile service

Post by cabooster »

Hello again,

I recently (two-three weeks ago) got my 1999 Volvo S80 serviced at my local dealer. I got the 82,500 mile service. However, I got it done at around 83,200 miles as I did not have time to get it done right at 82,500 miles due to my job. Now, a few weeks after I got the service, I turned on my car and drove home. On my way home, I had no problems with the car and needed to stop to get some groceries. When I cranked my car back on, I was greeted with the Service light, after pulling out of the parking lot and driving down the road for a couple of minutes the light went off. Now, the service light never came on when I needed to get it serviced-It just now came on for the first time since I've had the car, approximately 90 days. However, it was also pouring down rain tonight and I am worried that maybe that might have something to do with my problem. Can anyone please advise me if this is normal for the service light to come on for a couple of minutes and then go off, especially after getting the service that I just recently had done. Also, my mileage is just below 85,000 miles, I don't think the manual says anything needs to be done. Sorry for the long story, just wanted to get all the information to whomever might help me. Cheers.

The service light is a dumb timer, that counts down 7500 miles, or some length of time (I do not know how long, it's very rare that a car has the service light come on for elapsed time, before elapsed mileage), since it was last reset.
Once on, it stays on.
It'll then start saying "overdue" after even more miles have passed, and I'm not sure if there's an "extremely overdue" or not.

It should not just go back off.

It'll be elsewhere here, but what you do to reset it, is put the key in position one, push in the trip or the clock button on the instrument cluster (the left one, whichever that is) and hold it, rotate the key to position two (just before you would normally crank it. all the cluster lights come on), continue to hold it, it'll beep a few times and then the yellow information triangle will flash three times. Release the button immediately after the third time.
The service timer is now reset.
..err, unless 1999 was that one year when you HAD to go through VIDA (volvo's software) to reset the light. I know where was just one model year where that was the case. I mostly work on newer stuff.
For 1999 now that I think about it, some other light flashes three times, there is no center information triangle light.

So, if they simply forgot to reset the light at the service, then take it back, or, there you have it-- now you know how to do it yourself.

If it came on, then went off of its own accord, that's a bug. I'd forget about it for now, maybe it was a one-time blip. Likely the dealer won't know what to do about it if it came and went again and left no code. If it happens repeatedly, then worry about it.
