Volvo V40 dash indicators

Just bought a V40 1.9TD ES & there is a light that comes on sometimes that looks like an upside down 'y' any ideas.. need to get a manual as I couldn't turn the lights off on the way home.

ok just to add to it.. how do the lights work?? sorry if I am being stupid but I have got a light swith on the right with three settings
a circle
two lights
& a dipped beam, Which I assume is linked to another vertical dial just below it.

Now when the car is turned off the parking lights come on in the two lights position. And so to keep them turned off you have to leave them on circle or dipped beam which means the lights coem on when you start the car.. is this right? or am i being daft

any help would be great

+ the upside down 'y' is still there
