Popping Noise After Ipd Lowering Springs Installed

Post by rmorse »

Hey guys,

I have a 96 855R that I threw some IPD blue springs and Koni yellows on. I replaced everything in the front strut, but didn't touch the swaybar or endlinks yet.

Anyway, I immediately started getting "creaking" noises over slow driving and bumps, and I figured it was just the swaybar endlinks. However, a new symptom has arrived - popping when backing out of parking spots. Also, when pulling into parking spots, I can feel the front wheel kinda slide over. Lastly, when backing out of the parking spots, at full lock, I can feel the front left wheel catch and then pop/move.

What's going on? My guess is I need to throw some TKI endlinks on there. Either that, or new LCA (which I have some Kalphenke LCAs, just haven't thrown them on yet).

The lowering springs and new front suspension were installed about 2 months ago. New inner and outer tierods installed about 5k miles ago, both sides.

Thanks!

Make sure the lower control arm bolts are tight. Also check the ball joints for play. Endlinks won't make it feel like it shifts over.

Hey man, it could be your spring seats in the front, the ridges in the stock spring seat are known to wear out after increased load. Especially since the springs have a higher spring rate it could put more pressure on those ridges which could make the spring move around in the seat causing that infamous "creaking". Hope this helps.

If its only "popping" when your turning it could be one of your cv joints are bad.

^ agreed. This happened to the last 2 vehicles that I have owned and lowered even though I took extra care to insure proper seating and alignment. I would also check your cv joints and don't forget to get it aligned. Lowering will mess the alignment up. A good inspection around the recently done work is where I would start. Try and get leverage on every piece under there and wiggle to see if anything has any play.
