1997 850 GLT Start up, Idle and running Trouble

Post by ronzara »

My 97 850GLT (144,000 miles) has an issue (or maybe more than one ?).

When you try to start it (hot or cold), it's tough to start. Cranks fine, but usually take 2 or 3 5 second cranks to start. I pulled the MAF connector off, and the car starts right up, but has a dead spot at about 2200 rpm. I am assuming this is because with the MAF disconnected, the ECM is not adjusting the mixture properly when the engine is revved. ??

I have pulled the MAF out of the tube and connected it,... the car also starts up fine, but if I move the sensor around (like to try to put it back in the tube) the engine stumbles and dies.

My scanner gave me P0102 (MAF low input) and P0112 (Air Intake Temperature Low Input),... this was with the MAF OUT of the tube.... With it IN the tube, I got just the P0102 code.

I've checked the Fuel Pump, and The Fuel Pump Relay, I am sure they are working correctly.
I have not been able to locate the Throttle Position Sensor yet (have only have the car for a few days)....

I have noticed an AC hose running under the bottom of the radiator has been dragged on something causing a tear opening + the refrigerant to escape,.. makes me wonder if a sensor of some kind got banged up at the same time under there causing this issue.. ?!?!

Any Suggestions/Comments?

Thanks.

RZ, welcome to the forum. I guess you should replace the MAF and see how things go then.

Well, Bad News... I replaced the MAF with a new one, SAME SYMPTOMS.
Very tough starting and when it does, very uncontrollable rough idle and dies when you push gas to about 1/2 throttle. starts and idles pretty good with MAF unplugged. I pulled out the Idle Control Valve and sprayed it down with cleaner, seems to spin freely, the reinstalled it. Still the same.
:(

I have noticed some type of sensor on a bracket hanging on the back side of the bumper slightly to the drivers side in front of the radiator.
It looks like it may be broken. it has a plug on the rear side... (see Pic) Couple this is a problem?

This appears to be the ambient air temp sensor (only talks to the A/C) and should not be relevent to your symptoms. Sounds like some unmetered air entering your intake. Did you say you already checked for vacuum leaks (they're sometimes tricky to locate)?
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

What sensor did you get? as even if you bought a bosch unit, they seem to be a little different then the actual volvo units. Ive had good luck with non-blue box units but others have not. It's hit or miss...

Sorry to say but that might be your issue. They eBay ones can work but are hit or miss. It's not that the sensor is bad it's just that these volvos can be picky about MAF sensors and O2 sensors.

I would try and get a used known work Volvo unit from someone on here or VS. try that first...

I've used eBay sensors on a 99 that works but not all do.
