Stuck Throttle. Again...

Post by Fish stick88 »

Well, Just as I thought I was in the clear with the whole (stuck gas pedal) this pops up...
My gas pedal go stuck today, (to the floor) as it has before.
I know there is a recall out there for some other models, like the 850 turbo.

In my previous post, I tried cleaning out the throttle body, because they thought something was stuck in there.
Well, thats all clean, but doesn't help with the throttle issue

This time I was driving on pavement (snowy, and covered in black ice)
The road incline was about 5% maybe less. Nearly flat..

Not even sure where to start here, but I slammed on the brakes, (actually pulled the steering column out :? )((like the tensioner))
ABS was kicking in full gear, and my RPMs shot up. I shut it off immediately. Restarted. And it started right up...
We've determined that nothing from the spool - throttle body is rough
However, what about the rest? what would cause it to be fine right after?
Vacccum malfunction?
Any ideas?
A bit scared to drive again... I was heading right for cross traffic...
Thanks

Have you or anyone else changed vacuum lines in this car? There's one that goes to the cruise control pump that I believe could do weird things if hooked to the wrong port.

Your statement was a bit unclear - were YOU pushing on the gas hard before this happened, or the car accelerated all on its own?

I was coming to a stop, the gas inadvertently accelerated COMPLETELY on its own.
I don't know on the vaccum lines...

I'd remove the battery tray and inspect. The vacuum line should be connected to the top port (facing the battery tray).

If that's how it's set up, yank the fuse for the cruise control module for now and cross your fingers.

The only other thing I can think of...maybe your throttle body iced up? Have you done the "airbox thermostat mod"?

Did you hit the pivoting points with a spray grease as Ozark suggested?

Heat can do strange things to metal and change tolerances. For example as you have a steel pivoting pin and a aluminium throttle pulley that squeak can turn into a bind when hot.

The grease acts as a heat carrier and helps to transfer this heat to the next metal object.

Thoroughly lube everything that moves including the cable itself. For the cable you can run some light machine oil down the sheathing once it's removed.

Thanks everyone. I have looked into the recall for the throttle body - Icing up and what not...
But called volvo today, and they said my 94 sedan was NOT included in the recall.
Even though other online posts say it is....
I just threw out the vaccum thing as a possibility.
I'll try lubing everything up, (AGAIN) and see what that does for me, it hasn't done it today, so. It's basically at random.
I did not put in the Cold air Flow mod, I have thought about it. But i would likely take it out during the winter. It's nothing major. I'm probably going to put it in once spring is here, unless you all think i should hold off?

Some people have reported theirs iced up after doing that - but only in very, VERY cold temperatures.

About the cold air flow mod: I'm one of those few people who have had the throttle ice up. I live in central Iowa.

Happened once in one year then twice the next year, only on the VERY coldest days, and only when driving on the highway for an 30+ minutes. Now I only keep the mod installed in the warmer months, take it out in the late fall then put it back in March or so (I use a dowel). Has never happened again.

Experience is just like you described, can be very unnerving.

Throttle was sticking on my sons '98 v70, car was horrible to drive. I took the cover off the throttle linkage and wd40'd the cable and everything else that moves/pivots. That was over a year ago and it works fine. I spray it every once in a while.

That does not sound like stuck throttle at all, or lack-of-lube. That sounds like Cruise Control taking over. Take the Cruise Control fuse out like stated above, and that should keep your car from taking off unexpectedly.
