My husband has stage 4 cancer and I don't have the time like I used to nor do I want to put in any more money into this vehicle so I contacted a car ministry in Augusta, GA and was going to donate it for a tax write off but they had three cars and weren't ready to take mine so I parked it the beginning of Feb 2012. I went to start it a few days ago & it wouldn't start. If I can't get it running in the next 3 days, before our cars need to be reregistered, I will have to junk it on Friday which breaks my heart because of all the new parts on it. With my husband being ill, I don't have the time to part it out. My 89 740 GL Wagon (w/rumble seat)and 285,000 was still running the beginning of Feb and had just coded 2-3-2/2-3-1/2-2-1 from port #2 for fuel system problems, port #6 codes 1-1-1 so no ignition problems the beginning of Feb 2012. It sounded like it was idling rough from inside the car but outside the car sounded smooth as butter so I took it for a run pulled over & unplugged the AMM and it still ran the same. I had replace the AMM with an aftermarket part 23,000 miles ago so it looks like that ones already toast (new one's $380 from Volvo/ aftermarket $180) When it coded, I parked it at 284, 900 and after that used it once for about 60 miles replace the air filter and after putting gas in it on my way home, I reset the tripometer while I was driving (read after the fact never to do that) & broke some gear teeth and now the odom/tripom is broken. Was going to pull the instrument panel to see if the gears were similair to the 240 as I could purchase gears from [email protected]. if they were but put it off. So when I tried to start the car, I had to jump it. The battery didn't hold a charge so took my dated 1/10 battery back and just got a new pro-rated battery, popped it in, I get power but no crank. I am going out this morn to clear the codes, connect the battery and and try to start it again. If it starts, it will be off to Car Max to see what they will give me as it doesn't feel right to donate it to a ministry now. If you have any advice please let me know before Thursday morn 2/16/12.

I purchased the car in 2004 w/ 162,000 miles on it. It now has 285K. Used it to deliver mail as a PO sub 07-09 (245k-264k) and to date have put $13, 700 into it. I don't want to have to junk the car with rebuilt trans at 253K, at 284k water pump, 272k new inner tie rods, shocks, struts, lower ball joints, 275k new tires, 264k AC evap, engine mounts, 263k intake manifold gasket, timing belt, tensioner, PS belt, upper & lower timing belt covers, ECT sensors for both dash & fuel injection, 257,000 new spark plugs. I have a Chilton manual and codes sheets that I use with this car

Unused new parts I have on hand: lower radiator hose, brakes & pads, headlight, 2 oil filters, distrib. cap & rotor

I'm the owner posting a reply. Got the car running this morning. Had to jump the brand new battery as it was only pulling 4.7V on the voltmeter when I think it takes at least 11V to start a car. Cleared the codes. Let it run for a bit to recharge the battery and now it starts up like a champ each time. Now it's only gets one code # 2-2-1 = Heated oxy sensor running rich at part throttle. Unplugged the AMM again while it was running and now it runs rougher when it's disconnected which indicates, I believe, that the AMM is just fine and Does Not need to be replaced. So it looks like it needs the exhaust sensor to be replaced at the least but I plan on saying goodbye to this car that I have loved for a long time. To handle the new situation with my husband being ill, In the last 12 days I have picked up 2 Toyota Echos to replace my beautiful & clean Suburban which went to Car Max 2 days ago and now the Volvo that will be going somewhere today or tomorrow. I certainly will miss my Volvo :(.
