N/A car to Turbo!

Post by RDEJR »

NO I am NOT Swapping the turbo to the N/A engine.

YES I AM swapping the turbo engine into the N/A 'goon.

YES I DO want to know what all I NEED to change electronics wise.

I realize that this is a large undertaking, engine, pipes, exhaust, computer, dash cluster.. but do I need to swap the engine harness? Seems to me it should almost be a plug and play. Both cars were manufactured very near each other, both are OBDII, and both are 'goons.

My GLT only needs a turbo drivetrain to be "THE" car that I want. It has everything else. I am planning on a 5 day swap total:

1st day: Remove N/A engine and Turbo engine, start swapping components between cars.

2nd day: Finish swapping all components over to GLT that are needed, and place GLT parts in Turbo car. Also, service engines (PCV, RMS, T-belt waterpump etc. and place N/A throttle body onto Turbo engine!)

3rd day: Install Turbo engine into GLT and get it driveable!

4th day: Install GLT engine into Turbo car and get it driveable!

5th day: Finish up any loose ends, and sort out any codes there might be and Done!

Thoughts?

The OP has chosen the easiest way to get the job done. A donor car is really the only way otherwise too many trips to pick & pull.

Mind that the springs may be lower on the turbo car so swap them too. Watch out for larger diameter sway bars also.

If you have a copy of Vadis you can cross reference everything to be sure.

Also mind that when it comes time to sell you may have actually devalued the car for the majority of buyers.

Yes, you need to swap the engine harness. And maybe more I don't know, but I am sure about the engine harness.

Also, your timeline seems a little compressed.

Would be easier and probably cheaper to just buy a turbo car in the first place

Haha, I piddled around for about 7 months to swap a non-turbo engine into my non-turbo GLT.

I wish you all the best, please document it all.

This very swap has crossed my mind more times than I care to think about. I figured "simple" solution would be keeping all original non-turbo wiring and piggy-back fuel/spark control with something like a Split Second PSC-1, or just going Megasquirt.

Please post back your results. We would like to know what happens.

My opinion would be to dump both cars and purchase a turbo. I'd fly 1,000 miles to get a car that I could keep than to try a motor swap.
