98 V70 Tail light bulbs - where to buy?

Post by 98v70dad »

I am having trouble finding bulbs that will fit the 4 tail light bulb locations for my 1998 V70. I've been to 3 auto parts stores and a Walmart and they all point me to the same wrong bulb. I know the bulbs are wrong because they don't even fit into the bulb holder (the bayonets aren't right) First, my car has the rear fog light option. So, there should be two different bulb types, but both the owners manual and all the auto parts stores give just one bulb type. The owners manual gives 21/4W BAZ15d and the auto stores give sylvania 7225 (walmart, autozone, advance). Napa had a different p/n but the bulb was the same as 7225. I called the nearest dealer (not close) and the parts guy said "you won't find anything in the aftermarket that's correct -you'll have to get it from us." So far his comment matches my experience.

1)My question is this: Can anyone tell me whatpart numbers I should be buying and where I can get them? The volvo dealer is the obvious choice but he isn't in the same town as the car and his mark up is huge.

2) Follow on question: If anyone knows the part numbers for LED bulbs that will work I would appreciate knowing them. I won't be having this problem again anytime soon if I replace with LEDs.

Final Comment: I love this website. It is amazingly useful. Matt spent some time today helping me straighten out an issue with my account and i want to thank him and acknowledge his efforts with my appreciation! Thanks again Matt.

I'm not sure for the ones that are strictly taillights, but for the bulbs in the socket that doubles as a rear fog light (and the bulb in the same position on the other side) it is an 1157 bulb. You can substitute a 2057 if you want a slightly brighter bulb. The brake lights all use 1156 bulbs but again you can go with a 2056. If you go with the 2057 or 2056 bulbs, make sure you do it in pairs otherwise the bulb failure light may come on.

Thanks for the help. The fog light location was the only one I was able to get and I used an 1157 bulb like you said. 1157 fits in the fog lamp location. The watts on that bulb are higher, though. 24 and 6 if I remember right (instead of 21 and 4) . I once melted a bulb holder by substituting a slightly higher wattage bulb and I was concerned about that happening again if the light was on for a long time. I was also concerned that it will aggravate the annoying light out reminder. I'll also check the links provided in the first response. I haven't looked there yet, but plan to. I have checked other online places for that I usually use to Volvo OEM parts and they didn't have bulbs. I haven't looked for LED's yet ..... Other ideas/help is most welcome.

online owner's manual

The tail lights and the rear fog light is listed as having a BAZ 15 socket - also known as BA15D(Double contact Bayonet).

1157, 2057, 7528, 7225, 2357, 3496 bulbs will phyically fit

I appreciate your suggestions db130. Your car may be different than mine, but some of those bulbs will not physically fit in my car. I know because I have purchased three of those you mentioned and tried them and they will not go into the regular tail light spots. I know 1157 fits but it doesn't have the same specs as the OEM bulb. It also has two filaments and the regular taillight locations only need a bulb with one filament. If you look down into the sockets of the bulb holder you can see that the regular tail light locations have one contact instead of two. The fit problem is with the bayonets. The bayonets are different in the regular tail light spots (180 degrees apart versus 150 on a BAZ15d. Most autoparts stores carry the 7225 and it doesn't fit. I have also tried the 7528 and it also doesn't fit in the three regular tail light spots. That is my dilema. If you follow the owners manual you get the wrong parts except for the fog lamp location. The volvo dealer agreed with me that the manual is incorrect and should have two bulb callouts instead of one. He said come on in and we'll take care of it for you but I'm not paying 5 dollars a bulb and another 5 a bulb to replace them when I could do it myself in 10 minutes for about 10 bucks (If I could get the right part)

I have confirmed that the owners manual is INCORRECT except for the tail light bulb callout. I'll post what the correct part numbers are and what they cross to at the local auto parts store when I have time to buy the bulbs and confirm that they fit. I was able to find the OEM part numbers from the online vendors in one of the previous posts. thanks for the help.

For what it's worth, the volvo part number that comes up in VADIS for the bulb is 989792. "32/3CP" is the description, I assume for 32 / 3 candle power? That description is also stamped in the bulb socket.

Know this is an old thread, but he asked about a "tail light bulb" and "only need a bulb with one filament" but no one brought up the R5W (5007) bulb. If one looks on the socket base, you'll likely find the ECE designation telling exactly what goes there. See my Volvo Bulb Guide and Cross-Reference post for a full breakdown.

No.
5007 and 7506 have a BA15s base.
7507 has a BAU15s base.
7225 has a BAZ15d base.
1157, 2057, 2357, 3496, and 7528 all have a BAY15d base (not "BA15d" which has non-staggered pins), but they each vary in terms of volts, watts, amps, and lumens which is why they are given different numbers, just like different tires are even if they all "fit" a 15-inch wheel.

Seen a lot of U.S. brass-based bulbs forced into sockets, corroded in, broken glass. Simple to avoid via the link above. and that 3496 bulb is a krypton one whose heat and UV won't play well with plastic lenses over time.

This is a European vehicle. Stick with European spec bulbs as noted at the top.

Cheapest pace for bulbs: the junkyard! You'll pay pennies on the dollar, some places give them away for free, and if you are confused about what to buy you can be pretty sure what's in there was the right one ...
