White Smoke, Bad Smell, Misfire Code

Post by meyer_a »

I have a 2000 Volvo V40. About a month ago it was overheating, so I replaced the thermostat, which seemed to fix the problem. It has had misfire codes for about a month as well, and I haven't done much to address that problem. Today, white smoke poured out of the tailpipe for a few seconds on startup. It shook and vibrated a bit, and there was an awful burning smell from the engine. I really hope it isn't a head gasket. Any suggestions?

I would pull current codes, then inspect the spark plugs (they can be very eloquent), check the condition and level of engine oil and coolant (cross-contamination and/or fluid loss), and finally do a compression test.

In general, white smoke can mean either oil or coolant (depending on odor). By "burning smell from the engine" you mean from the tailpipe, yes?
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Exhaust smell coming from the engine compartment? PCV condition, hose cracked maybe?
