Looking for advice/ideas for excellent steering wheel cover

Post by fazool »

My 2001 S60 has 142,000 miles on it. I did some mental math and guessing an average speed just under 30MPH, the steering wheel has been gripped and wrung for about 5000 hours.

So, its no suprise to me that the leather is as smooth as plastic. I really notice it when I go from my newer S60 to this one: Same feel, same size, same grip but the texture is really smooth.

So, I was thinking of dressing it up a little and improving the grip while I am at it.

Its not important enough to warrant buying a new sterring wheel and I'm not sure if I haven't had any luck finding a better condition one at a pick-n-pull.

My first car had a really nice laced on cover and I loved it. Especially since steering wheels back then were pencil thin hard plastic. So, I wouldn't mind a really good quality lace on leather cover. I've found a brand called Wheelskins and they are about $50 (which seems steep).

I definitely don't want a universal, slip-on or one-size-fits-all. And I want something that matches the interior.

So two questions:

1) any recommendations for a best quality hand laced leather cover?

2) what other models and years will directly fit a 2001 S60 (to expand my scrounging) ?

Thanks

I happend to see that IPD has some steering wraps for sale. No idea on the quality, but give 'em a call and see what they think.
