Thud/banging from under 2004 XC90

Post by rob11 »

Hello all...

I am trying to figure out a recent noise coming from what seems to be the rear passenger area of my 2004 2.5 xc90 AWD.

The noise - a slight bang/pop/thud can be heard when going over bumps /curbs etc. It seems to happen only with the rear right side.

I can feel a slight thud from the floor board as well when it happens. Now the funny thing is the noise IS NOT there if it's raining or driving through snow.

The noise is ONLY there when it's dry outside. I can push on the rear bumper and reproduce the sound most of the time when it is happening.

So last night I crawled under and looked around...I could not see anything out of sorts. I then grabbed a can of WD40 and sprayed the crap out of all the suspensions parts I could see - including the rear springs.

Did the "push down on the bumper" test - all was quiet!

Drove to work this morning and for the first half of the drive - all was good - but as I arrived at work the noise was back.

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

Update:

Well last night after I got home from work I tried to pin point the sound of the "thud/bang" and narrowed it down to something behind the passenger wheel well.

I spray down in the area and the noise stopped - tested by bouncing the rear of the car form the bumper.

I took a picture of where I sprayed the lub - this time I used white grease:

Anyone know what's behind here and why the noise stops when lubricated?

The noise came just before I pulled into work...so it's a temp fix.

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers
