Easy fix for smoking 850 turbo

Post by billy »

Most easy fixes I hear about....bomb out..not this one..it's a miracle. My 95 850 (195K) turbo for over a year would intermittenly smoke like a Hollywood Fog Generator. Mostly it would start while idling. A volvo nut told me it was probably in the crankcase ventilation system, worn turbo charger, or worn valve guides. He mentioned that if it were the valve guides..best easy shot was to change the oil to 20-50W. Did that...bing,bang....has not smoked since and I have tried every thing to get it to smoke. I can now get stuck in the drive-in window at Burger King without gassing out the family in the car behind me. I would like to hear results from others who have same problem

Not a result but that fix may not be good to the rest of the motor. How many miles do you have (195k is not to bad)? It is likely time to get a valve seal job unless you are ready to part with the car. Running 20w-50 in it may put you on the express train.

Thanks for your input...I probably need enlightend..what would be the net affect and why? What would be determintal to the rest of the motor? Possibly I could go down to a 10-40W next change and achieve same results..no smoking...the valve seal job seems to be a big expense that might not value out in the total "how much do you put into an old car equation" I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks

20W-50 may cause increased wear when starting the engine and running during colder temperatures. It can also cause a decrease in MPG. I used to run 15W-40 synthetic, then 10W-30 synthetic, and now I run Mobil 1 10W-40 synthetic high mileage. With the synthetics you can run a slightly higher weight oil since they usually are a thinner oil than their conventional counterparts. Believe it or not, since I switched from 10W-30 to 10W-40 I no longer see smoke out of my tailpipe.
