I have been working with Volvo's since 1982 and I am sure this has happened before but it is a first for me.
I was asked to help a local man who had changed his cam belt and run into no compression.
Today when I examined the engine I found that the last mechanic had beaten the cam belt lower pulley (on crank) onto the crankshaft aprox 60 degrees off from its proper place. I can't imagine why or how but there it was.
We took out the starter on this 1998 s70 non turbo and used the tool to set the crank.
Just for fun I found out that TDC is 3 teeth away from the timing mark. In other words you have to turn the crank pulley 3 teeth clock wise and you are then at TDC. (looked like the timing mark is close to 20 degrees BTDC)
What happened was not his fault and I just wanted to let others know it can happen. ( I was shocked but not surprised) I am doing the valve work for him free of labor charge. I guess if you buy a used car you should verify the pulley was not beaten on incorrectly and that your timing marks are in the right place for the crank and cams. All three were off in this application.
I can understand fighting the norm and putting your own marks to later use them (this keeps the actual Volvo marks in correct alignment. But taking off all 3 pulleys and putting them on wrong just baffled me.
Anyone else ever seen this or similar? I'm sure any horror story would make the owner feel better.
