Hello all - got a curveball for ya.
I have a '99 S70 GLT Turbo. I installed a used ETM (build date 2008) from a 2000 S80 T6 Turbo, and it works flawlessly with no dealer programming necessary. When I turn on the ignition, it turns on, then clicks off after 6 seconds - this is considered a normal power on self test.
I also acquired an ETM (build date 2008) from a 2000 S70 NON-Turbo as well. Tried that on my '99 Turbo, and it idles poorly, but revs smoothly. Also, it never clicks off during the power on self test. Just a constant buzzing. Another oddity is that the throttle plate can be moved with the car off, ignition on, pushing the gas pedal. None of my Turbo ETMs allow this.
Is this simply a software issue, or is the Non-Turbo ETM bad? I don't want to throw it out if it just needs a software update for my turbo vehicle.
Conversely, would it likely work just fine if installed on another non-turbo vehicle? If I go to sell it, this would make it easier on me AND the buyer. (I don't want someone with a turbo car to buy an ETM that will not work!) My assumption is that the software in my turbo ECU isn't talking with the non-turbo ETM properly, possibly preventing a normal power on self test.
If anything, I think this would be good information for us to find out to help others searching for used ETMs on this website.

Have you heard this one? How long is a piece of string?

This ETM saga has me absolutely bewildered as well. I had a white stickered and not updated ETM in an unstarted project car (1999 V70 na) that turned out was dead only after I fitted a Sacer sensor. It no longer responds to power and is now a parts ETM.
So I ordered a white stickered one off eBay USA and it had been taken from a 2000 S80T6. It works perfectly. I even managed a sweep test on it with Vida and it responded meaning it had been updated with post 2006 software.
Then I began repairing them for local Australian customers and found so many variations of faulty ETMs that would make anyone's head spin. More than 50% of the ETMs I encountered were unrepairable due to internal board faults.
One of them disallowed input from one side due to corrosion entering the contacting strip. This was cleaned but the board had suffered damage. Another switched off the sensor 2 input after sleep mode was entered into (12 secs on this one)
And yet another allowed the car to start and idle but called up internal faults and sat the idle at 1200rpm. Then yet another worked momentarily (after the owner had totally cut the loom and removed the wrong sensor) then suddenly died after I had repaired the loom and restored another sensor.
So far I've managed to repair 4 units out of a possible 9. I also bought another one off eBay for stock and it was dead.

Very interesting. Since this post, I had found that the Turbo ETMs will work on Turbo cars, and the N/A ETMs will not work on Turbo cars.
Interesting that you found that a Turbo ETM did work on your N/A car though. Like you said, there are probably many variations of ETM and software that it'd be simply impossible to check.
