Hi Folks,
Old geezer here thinking about what to do after retirement. I have 5 years to run. I have been toying around with going through some training to become ASE certified as a Parts Specialist. I do know that one has to work in the field to get the patch but am thinking that being able to demonstrate that I have enough interest to attempt formal training might give me a leg-up. I'm not planning to go full-bore new career but I may want to manage like an AutoZone or work on the parts counter at a dealership.
I started wrenching at 12 years old but ended up going in computer networking for 40+ years and wrenched on the side for myself, family and neighbors (those that brought beer anyway). I can't go idle at retirement because I want to live long enough to see my grand-kids grow up. Does this seem to be a reasonable way to break into new field with literally no experience other than being a constant parts customer? I'm thinking there must be some opportunities for someone who hasn't got deep money demands and would definitely prefer part-time work.

Yeah that wouldn't be hard to do. You may need to start a job before you can get ASE. Double check on their web site. You can create an account if you want at myase.com. You can also find test study guides online you can order them and look though them at home. Good luck!

Worked for a food manufacturer but also took car of company vehicles and then worked at Pepboys for 6 months, moved over to Acura for another 6 months before an elbow injury ended my career attempt as an Auto Mechanic. Go to their website and see what options are available to count towards your experience as they may have changed. Purchased 2 different sets of self study material 1 Official another General and passed 4 of 8 ASE Certification 8 months into my short live 12 month career as an Auto Mechanic. Good thing I had the injury as I knew and understood more than I had experience working on the cars. Still a mediocre DYI. Do some research on-line as it been over a dozen years since my ASE's expired.
