I just put a '96 R ECU in my '97 T5 and didn't see anything over 10psi, which is stock for a T5, what I've been getting for ten years with OEM ECU. I did not give it more than a few WOT runs however. I did disconnect the negative terminal before installing the ECU.
Everything else is as it was before the ECU swap, including the helpful illuminated Service light
