Effects of a '96 R ECU in '97 T5?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Effects of a '96 R ECU in '97 T5?

Post by matthew1 »

More boost (over 10psi?) or longer duration of 10psi boost? I remember reading that the 850 R allowed max boost for 30 seconds. And IIRC the '96 was rated for 240hp.

I just put a '96 R ECU in my '97 T5 and didn't see anything over 10psi, which is stock for a T5, what I've been getting for ten years with OEM ECU. I did not give it more than a few WOT runs however. I did disconnect the negative terminal before installing the ECU.

Everything else is as it was before the ECU swap, including the helpful illuminated Service light ;-).

On an R ECU you don't hit fuel cut until 17psi as with the t5 it was 14psi I think. I was running 14psi with a MBC. You have to tighten your wastegate a little. 4.5 was stock for R and 3.5 for T5 I believe. That should get you to around 12psi. Good luck.
