1995 850 Automatic non turbo Transmission Problem

Post by proracer »

I have a 1995 850 non turbo with an automatic transmission.

The car will not move in reverse. It will jump in and out of gear at about 2000 rpm and will not move.

The car will move forward, but the transmission slips.

With the transmission in neutral and the engine off, you can push the car forward, but you cannot push the car backwards.
(putting the car on the rollback, it was pulled backwards and the front tires would drag).

Before all the above happened, it was running great. Checked the fluid, it was 2 quarts low. Topped it off and there was no change.

What do you think?

Thanks, Jim

Have you checked the DTC codes in port A-1? Any electronic error would register there but electronic errors are usually accompanied with a flashing up arrow light.

At the end of the day used transmissions run in the $300.00 to $500.00 range from reputable salvage dealers like Erie and Tom's.

The later models ('96 and on) will bolt up but they will be missing the vehicle speed sensor.

The car is at AMCO. They have given me a price of $2100.00 plus any hard part for a rebuild.

They have also given a price of $900.00 for a used Transmission plus labor to install it.

I would get it home and do it my self but it will not move in reverse with the shifter in neutral. It only will move forward.

There may be a differential problem....?

The used transmission has a 6 month warrenty.

The bands in the transmission are burnt up and it will definitely need to be replaced.

I would get a second opinion - I believe all AAMCO's are a rip off, and they do shoddy work. I had them put a clutch in a car and it burnt up 20,000 miles later.

I would definitely investigate why the fluid was low in the first place...either a transmission seal or the cooler hoses were leaking, but you should definitely have sene evidence of a leak on the ground.

Do shop around. I purchased 2 used trannys for $100. Then I was truely blessed to have a Indi Volvo mechanic install it for $400. Another mechanic offered to do it for $500. I also had the RMS done at the same time so after fluid and all it cost me about $580.

I drove my car for about 2,500 miles with the tranny bad. Try not to rush into anything.

Why does the car only move forward when it is put in neutral, with the engine off?

It will not move in reverse if it is put in neutral, when pushed, with the engine off....

Thanks, Jim

With engine running, it will move forward but not reverse.

With the engine off...car in neutral it can be pushed forward.

With the engine off...car in neutral it will not move....front wheels lock up.
