Replacing Fuel Pump

I am going to replace the fuel pump on my 05 xc 90 t6. It continues to stall and die with 1/4 tank gas or less. 2 dealers have told me I should keep no less than 1/4 gas in for best performance. So I should fill up with 100 mi left on tank?? Does not make sense. So, has anyone out there replaced their fuel pump? I have a 7 seater. I have searched the web for a service manual, but no luck. Thanks
