engine interchangeability between 760 and 940

engine interchangeability between 760 and 940

hello, new member has a question, pertains to dropping in a '94 230FT replacement motor into '90 760 car. I understand dimensional it will work, but Is it interchangeable from a ECU aspect (sensors, OBDII, etc)?

For a 1990 your good to go. The 90 turbos were LH 2.4 as is the 1994. 1994 is a way better motor. Longer life timing belt, oil cooling spray jets under pistons, and improved cup type freeze plugs.

Thanks Jimmy57 for reply. In case you're wondering, i'm changing out motor due to piston slap noise (only when cold), it currently has 240K miles. I also heard about the improved piston oilers with the '94. I read a post awhile back that the sensors/ECU on the '94 are not compatible with the '90 and modification is required (ie swap out head, keeping sensors/harness from existing '90 vehicle) due to the fact '94 has different OBD?

No, the break is at 1989 to 1990 on the turbo 4 cylinders. Even then it is no big deal. The engine coolant temp sensor is different between the earlier system and the newer system and is the same size where it screws into head.
But no worries for you as the 90 and 94's both used LH 2.4 fuel injection from Bosch.
