850 T5 problems

Post by mac1334 »

I need some help with my 97' 850 T5. I have been having a starting issue over the last month when the car is run for awhile. It will start up fine when cold but when I drive it to work or to the gas station it takes about 5 or 6 times for it to start. Sometimes I have to wait for 30 minutes or so before it will crank. It always turns over and I hear the fuel pump kick on but will not completely crank. I have a check engine light on the dash. I tried to pull the codes but the OBDII connector at the shifter is not working. I remembered the Volvo dealership said they could not get it to work last time in the shop. I have checked the fuel pump relay, injector relay, battery, and fuses/connectors and did not see anything wrong. It also has been getting poor gas milage over the last month. It went from 25.6mpg to 22.3mpg max and I only put mid to high grade gas in it since new. I also just put a new radiator and thermostat in the last week due to a crack in the radiator. Could not believe it lasted for 225,000 miles before it went. I have put new plugs, wires, rotor, cap, and battery within the last 10,000 miles and has been running fine. The starting issue is throwing me for a loop. I am mechanically inclined and have been doing maintenance on cars for 20 years but this problem is gotten me stumped. I am currently in college and have limited funds so I am trying to troubleshoot myself if I can. The dealership said they can take a look at it for about $125 but dont know if they can diagnose without reading the codes. Any suggestions ?

Next time it won't start, check the fuel pressure at the rail via the Shrader valve. Leave the key in position II.

I had been having very similar issues over the last two years and tried many things to fix it. Even though you hear the fuel pump come on doesn't mean it's operating at the level it should. It's less than a hundred bucks and pretty easy to fix yourself. The hardest part for me was getting the special retainging nut off, as I didn't have the exact tool. I ended up buying a 'plier' type oil filter wrench and was able to get it off. What a difference it made. Improved idle, acceleration, mpg, and solved the warm start problem.

Does it sound like this? Won't turn over right away, but usually after a few tries it does? My starter solenoid went bad awhile back. Waited about 3 months til it needed fixed. (Until it wouldn't start anymore). Welcome to MVS, You'll find that different people here have different perceptions to what problems may or may not be, Videos, with sound and visual depictions are great for helping us to diagnose the problem.
