XC90 snorkel for offroading

Hello, I would like to know if there is a snorkel that can be installed on the XC90, what I mean is a snorkel like 4x4 off road jeeps, suvs, trucks. The one that is a duct that is located at the passenger side (outside) door.

I think it would be quite an undertaking to waterproof the rest of the car, i.e. install drains in body cavities, waterproof the diffs and tranny, somehow waterproof the spark plugs and battery, engine compartment, etc... Could be done, but would be mighty expensive I think...unless you took it to a qualified 4x4 shop. They might have some ideas and expertise to bring to the table. It would be a custom job of course, so it would only be as good as the person who completed it.

I'm interested in hearing what you've found on this, as I'm working on an offroad project for the v70 XC.

Hello boycolin,

Unfortunately no news about this topic... to be honest I was wondering about a snorkel only because I had a problem passing through a river and my engine swallowed some water through the engine air intake, and then the engine light comes on. After that I had to change oil, filters and some other parts... that is why I was wondering if the air intake were upper than the standard position I wouldn´t have the problem.

Anyways, I think no one around the world has made this kind of job for the XC90, because there is no pictures in the internet.

I'm taking my XC70 to Alaska this summer, put in new suspension all around to get her as high as possible and installed some big 245/65/17 tires that lift her another inch. Would be cool to get a snorkel in case of any deep-ish water crossings I might come across for some peace of mind, I know the rest of the car isn't waterproofed but it would be better to not worry about water into the engine.

When I was in South America there were plenty of automotive shops in towns that had a stock of various snorkels, they were able to find what fit best to any model car and make it work. Not sure we have the same luxury here in Canada, especially around here in Toronto where the off roading scene is basically nonexistent. I'll have to contact an offroad shop here to see if they can work any magic.

The air filter on the XC70 is on the driver side so it would have to go there unfortunately, and not passenger side, will have to investigate some more

I'm putting this in the Feb MVS Newsletter, get you some responses and ideas, hopefully.

Driver side would be terrible for visibility. I hope you can find a way to put this on the passenger side.

I'm guessing the car will stop working with water everywhere before having a snorkel is an issue. It's a slightly higher road cruiser after all. So don't rely on it. But for the looks, sure go for it and make sure you post pictures!

I am with Rattnelle - the XC90 is not made for off road use. My take is the XC90 snorkel for off road use would be more to keep air in the cabin when it fills with water. Still I await pictures.

Good thing it doesn't snow in Alaska in the summer... just saw this on FB in a Colorado car group I'm in.... we just had a snowstorm.

I would be careful trying to dive with these cars.. Even just on the road, there have been issues with water ingress, firewall harness not sealing properly, water leaking on computer modules hard to diagnose. I wouldn't go deeper than 1ft water, even the transmission has a breather pipe that may suck water in.

If it's just for mud play, should be fine
