What wiring where? What does the wiring control? How much is damaged? Might not be that bad.

OK, seriously, you gotta include some more information here.
1. What is the wiring connected to? There's lots of stuff that deals with idling and wiring.
2. What are the symptoms you're having? Will it start? If not, when? (only when cold/hot, etc). Does it idle? If so, at what RPM. If not, does do anything else?
3. At the dashboard, is it the RPM gauge?
There's lots of things that could be wrong, not all of which are "big money". Sometimes there's just a bad ground that needs to be reconnected (free). Sometimes, the ECU is bad (expensive). Sometimes the TPS is bad ($37 bucks at FCPGroton).
Tell us a little more about what the car is doing...

I purchased the car a couple of months ago from someone who was storing it in there front yard.. I put the car right on the road because there was nothing wrong mechanically (or at least as far as starting it/ driving it). I bought the car from a family member that never had any problems with the vehicle. After about a week or so of having the car on the road and in good driving condition the battery light came on, then a couple days later it stalled out of no where and would not restart. After jumping the car it would start but would not stay running for long. I replaced the alternator, and the car was still doing the same thing, except that it would stay running but with a rough idle. At the same time most of the dash instruments were on the outs. some of the gauges would work and some not. Foe example if i touched the overdrive button on the side of the stick shift the gas gauge and the turbo gauge would work but the rpm and temp gauge wouldn't and if i touched the overdrive again it would reverse the process. I am a college student with alota shit going on and didn't have the time to deal with the problem so i took the car to a "back yard" mechanic he told me he could do the job and that the problem was small and that there must have been field mice where the car was being stored and they chewed through some of the wires. after he had the car on the lift he called and said that there was alot of corroded wires underneath the car and he didn't know what he was doing as far as that goes and as a result it would cost me too much money to get the car fixed by him. So i am currently seeking another opinion from a more reputable garage. My problem is that I'm not sure what this guy is going to tell me as far as price goes, like i said i am a college student and don't have that much money?????Anonymous wrote:OK, seriously, you gotta include some more information here.

Have you tried hooking up a new/good battery? I know that you've got a new alternator, but if the battery was dead as hell (like mine was when I bought the car-I could get it to start from a jump, but it wouldn't hold a charge), then you need a new one.
As for that little button on the shifter-don't mess with that. It's voodoo. Just leave the OD on.
As for the turbo gauge, it's pneumatic-runs on vacuum pressure from the throttle, and you can trace the hose (the ONLY hose coming from behind the dash, above the brake pedal slightly to the left) through the firewall, to the throttle, and another hose from the throttle to the turbo. If your gauge isn't working, either the gauge is dead or there's a weird leak in the hose. The hose can be either 3/16 or 1/4, and runs you about 99 cents per foot.
You may also have some kind of voltage regulator funk going on.
I know it sucks, but you may need to take this car to a volvo shop and have them diagnose the problem for you. This won't be free, but you may be able to do the repairs for yourself. I recommend you go to www.brickboard.com, and look in the 700/900 FAQ area and try to see if you can figure it out yourself.
I remember being a college student (back in the day) with no money (just like today). I sure learned a hell of alot about working on my cars. After all, necessity is the mother of invention...
