buying a 960?

Post by shegarty »

hi all - looking to buy my third Volvo and came across a potential 960 in my price range. I currently own a 90 740 and a 94 850 (not on the road) but know little about the 960's. I am not afraid of tackling work on my own and have some outside resources that I can call in when needed. So, what do I need to know about these cars in terms of common faults or things to look out for? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

From '95 on the 960 had fewer problems than the earlier models.

Front lower control arm bushings tend to need replacing and the vacuum servos in ECC system can leak. Front brakes can suffer from vibration caused by the front brake discs (rotors). All are repairable by the average home mechanic.

225,000 kms is the interval for second timing belt change, so that is about due.
