2002 S60 A/C vibration when on Auto

Post by Syrix »

Hi, this just started yesterday in my Volvo. I got in and cranked it up then put the A/C on auto. Like usual it goes into high mode because the car had been sitting all day in the sun. The steering wheel starts vibrating and I can hear a "vibrating" sound from the passenger side around the floor board. It continues like this when I drive. I put the A/C on lower, like around medium, and it stops. The air is still nice and cool.

Is there anything I could check or could this be the start of something with my A/C? Thanks!

Sounds like your fan is out of balance. It could have something that got in from under the dash or from the air inlet under cowl. The air filter may have dropped a piece into it.

Edit: Not possible for air filter to have lost a piece as the filter is down stream on P2's. Still possible for other things to get into blower wheel.

I concur its your HVAC blower motor.

Its likely a bearing thats worn out.

I understand its quite a project to remove that blower but the repair of the bearing is rather easy.

Here is a DIY on how to remove it. Have a look at it first. Two of the 5 screws that maintain the blower fan in place are hard to install. Some leave them out and the motor assembly can wobble. Also look for any obstructions.

Blower motor repair

The motor is pretty much sealed. The wheel is coming with the motor as one assembly.

I opened one recently to investigate. At high mileage brushes get worn out. It is not built to be opened.

I have this exact same issue that started yesterday in my 2003 XC70 with 190K on it. Did you fix this and or what was the cause?
