Hello, new 850 Turbo owner...

Post by KaferChris »

Hello, name is Chris. I'm 26 and I just recently acquired a `96 Turbo sedan automatic...227K on the clock, dealer maintained car with timing belt at ~210K, even a Volvo battery. I looked all around the Seattle area and initially was looking at cars with ~100K on them but unfortunately all were heavily run-into-the-ground. I found this one at a local Volvo dealership and it's been treating me quite well for the past several weeks, though I have a work vehicle M-F.

No sooner than I brought it home I found the article on heat-gun restoration of faded trim and it paid off, everyone who sees the car is floored by how clean it is considering my horror stories while on the initial search.

So far I have replaced the cracked front caliper hoses with FTC braided units, the OEM front pads were quite worn and were swapped-out for some Stoptech units, the trunk struts were shot but IPD had some that have been working out just great. The driver's seatbelt receiver was also in terrible condition, but a shot of PB Blaster has restored its function more than I could have ever imagined.

I'd like to upgrade the wheels and rotors (sourced some ATE 302mm), but have recently run into a problem finding the correct caliper bracket for use with the conversion, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Aside from that I'm an oval short-track racer/crew member as well as an ACVW-fanatic & shade-tree mechanic with a small fleet of them my Father and I share (he managed a couple independent shops in the `80's).
This is our current pride & joy(although a work in progress), it's been on the road reliably for several months now after taking years to complete with many other projects competing for attention:

Was that photo taken (to be taken) in year 2300, when Terminators walk the Earth looking for humans to destroy? ;-)

Welcome, Chris. I saw your post about the 302mm brakes... I bought an upgrade kit (used) a couple months ago, but have shelved that until I find 17" wheels, or until I find a set of cheap Perfos or other Volvo 16s that will work. Anyway, I don't know the part #s of the brake hangers I got in the kit, but I'll photograph them when I get home tonight and post to that topic. Maybe that'll help you.

I had a ball in a sand rail ~20 years ago in San Felipe, MX. It was my uncle's, and he kept it at a friend's house. It was in poor condition, but a $1000 sand rail barely running is more fun than 99% of street cars. I drove it about once a year for five or six years, whenever I got down there. Had to improvise many fixes out in the desert/dunes to get back. It was a 1600cc VW with a single blatty "trumpet" exhaust, which had it's very own high performance, lightweight coffee can cap to keep the rain/sand out. Many, many great stories involving that old rail.
