1984 Volvo 244 turbo 4sp 250-260k miles. Here are the concerns: The car was in some kind of front collision before I owned it. The bumper, etc were replaced but you can see some of the trim missing and the metal bent. I had it aligned long ago and it doesn't pull or anything. The paint ain't great, but it's not horrible either. The driver's side map pocket and the top of the center console are broken. (pretty common) The springs in the driver's seat gave out several years ago but I found a used seat that matches perfect and is in great shape. The A/C doesn't work. (duh) The overdrive is often reluctant to engage unless you are above 70mph, I think the fluid needs a change and the screens cleaned. The reverse lights don't work, I think it may be the sensor at the transmission. One of the lenses is also missing, but I have a replacement. The front grille and the reflectors are cracked, probably from being backed into. The "turbo" emblem has fallen off the back but I have it. There are some minor dings and a bit of rust, but the car is 28 years old. Odometer doesn't work but car has about 250-260k miles.
Can anybody tell me the difficulty in finding parts and making repairs for these issues? Like the body trim (missing trim, bent metal, cracked grill and reflectors) and possibly interior pieces. Does this car use r-134a for the a/c? I don't have any experience with overdrive so how serious is this matter and is it really as simple (if simple) as changing the fluid and cleaning the screens? And finally about the reverse lights, is this as simple as a burnt fuse or does it go beyond that?
Owner is asking $2000 but told me he will take $1700. I do not plan on spending $1700 on a car. What would be a reasonable price if I am to drive about 50 miles to pick up this car? How much would all the repairs cost me? And would anybody happen to know average gas mileage with these things? I am after all looking for a reliable and economical commuter, I was just distracted by the "turbo"
Thanks in advance! I am very excited to own my first Volvo!
