Just quit running..."timing tensioner"?
2004 XC 90 with 149 k miles. Going down the highway at 60 mph and engine just quits. Electrics still working and still gas in tank. No thump, no sputter, no surge, just turned off! In the past when the vehicle quit running (probably the phantom module issue posted elsewhere on this forum) the engine continues to run BUT no electric power thereby putting the vehicle in "limp home mode". This limp home mode (not even headlights OR flashers) has happened more than a dozen times over the previous 2 years with no appropriate fix from Volvo. Anyway, this is different...NO ENGINE, NO RESTART. Towed it to the dealer. Any ideas from folks out there are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Service dept. called and said they are not sure yet but think the tensioner that keeps the timing belt broke. Not the belt itself. His comment, "probably needs a new motor...if you want to keep the car at all". This month is our final payment on this XC 90...uncanny irony. Please let me know what questions, comments you may have since I'm having trouble thinking straight. This 2004 only has 149k miles and has a new transmission...unbelievable!!! What would you do?

Sorry to hear of your woes.
Actually the belts themselves are quite hardy unless they expire for time/mileage. Tensioners (in this case a mechanical one) have been known to fail. Any experienced independant garage can replace some bent valves and have the guides/stem seals checked and replaced in these cylinder heads. Rarely do pistons get permanent damage. Expect around $2,500 if done at an independant garage.
There's a section here at Matthews where recommended independant repairers are flagged. See if there's one in your area. Volvo dealers will likely recommend an entire engine;for most customers far too costly and unecessary.
Clearwater Cylinder heads will likely be able to assist with a reco head for around $450.
Let us all know how you go with this.

Did you replace your timing belt when it was due? It sounds like you may have skipped that required service. Yes, the dealer will try to sell you a new engine. I would call a few independents and get some quotes. They will not be able to give you exact quotes until they get the head off and see what all is damaged. Where are you located??
