I have a 1998 Volvo V70 with a VW TDI engine. It is 2,5 straight 5 cylinder.
The engine has some 200 kMiles, good condion, used to belong to my mechanic.
The stutter is not like the problems told in other topics. It is basically only coming when the speed gets to 7-10 mph, only when slowing down, not when accelerating. The thing happens mainly when I am driving in a traffic jam. And in most cases the air conditioning is on, and compressor running (it happens seldom when a/c is off). Rev is basically just above 800 (engine is idling, while car is still rolling), no change in the revs when the stutter happens. Does not matter if brakes are on or not. If I step on the throttle, increase the revs above 1200 then stutter stops, until revs are back at idle.
There is no issue with the wheels, the stutter comes from the engine. I know it because when I turn the engine on, it shakes the steering wheel in the same way.
The stutter is mainly felt and seen at the steering wheel.
I can also feel a stutter at the car body driving steady at 120 mph, but this is not coming from the wheels or struts - I had them checked. It is not like the shaking from an unbalanced wheel.
I cleaned the EGR valve, I had the a/c compressor mended. I cleaned the intake manifold. As a result, car is running much smoother, better mpg, but the stutter is still there.
I replaced air filter.
I changed oil and filter.
I tried using better diesel. No change.
Engine mounts are OK.
Pls. help!
Thanks.
