Starter not working properly after transmission replacement

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Starter not working properly after transmission replacement

Post by cabooster »

Hi all,

I've had it with my car. Last week at just under 180,000 miles, the transmission on my 1999 S80 2.9 went out. What happened was that my transmission would shift into neutral at a traffic light then lurch forward when I gave it gas to go. The dealership that I took it to (first mistake) said that they would replace it for $5500. Luckily, I was able to get them down to around $4400 and they replaced my transmission with a new one. However, when I got my car back, my starter wouldn't start properly making a noise and sometimes disengaging early. I wanted to know if any of the Volvo gurus on this site could tell me if the dealership tinkering with my transmission and suspension (spring seats and struts replaced as well) could have possibly caused this. I took it there in working order other than the transmission, the starter worked fine. However, when I was never told when I was paying for the repairs and didn't find out until looking at my receipt that the starter was screwy. My father went to the dealership when they test drove the car to see what was wrong with the transmission and said everything was working perfectly. Do I have a case to get it fixed free of charge since it seems they are the ones who messed it up?

Certainly sounds plausible. Have you spoken with the dealership since you came across the starter issue.

Yes, they said that it had absolutely nothing to do with the transmission, yet a third-party mechanic said it does. The woman at the dealership's response to my polite way of pointing this out was "Well, we can argue about it all day long, but there's nothing I can do for you." I was old by this same dealership that this car was in amazing shape (only had 77,xxx original miles when I bought it in 2011, and it is a 1999 model) and that I would not have to worry about anything. So far, I've replaced brakes, struts, spring seats, voltage regulator, and balljoints. I want to get it fixed for free because I feel like they caused the problem.

It is not impossible to get the starter misaligned when reinstalling it.
Ask the stelership to doubleckeck if the fasteners are torqued to spec. Make sure the Manager gets involved. Those 'professionals' would use anything to maintain their own job security.
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
