Continued MAF issue (or something like it)?

Post by Baffled By Brick »

Okay, here's what's happening with my 1991 Volvo 740 Turbo (with about 150,000 miles, and hundreds of thousands to go?)...

Within the last 9 months, I've personally replaced the in-tank and in-line fuels pumps (both new units), the MAF sensor (with a remanufactured Cardone unit), the fuel pressure regulator (new unit), the fuel suppression relays (new), the vacuum lines (new), fuses, the air filter (discarded the OEM foam underlayment), checked / secured grounds, replaced harnesses (new), inspected / cleaned / cleared replaced hoses, and reset the ECM every time a repair done.

Current symptoms (in limp home mode, running rich) which appear to point (again) to the (just replaced) MAF sensor...

No issue starting, idling (though somewhat low at about 650 RPM), no problem accelerating or otherwise apparently fuel related while operating in either park or reverse (accelerates awesomely this way, but not my preferred direction of travel). No apparent electrical or spark issues.

The brick's idle, while in drive, at a stop sign or light, while braking and / or under load, will eventually hesitate, outright stall and will certainly not accelerate (surrounding drivers neither pleased nor very understanding, even with my emergency flashers on). Putting it in neutral or park quickly enough might avoid the engine dying, but forget acceleration.

Utilizing the OBD, no DTCs (1-1-1).

Sounds like the 'new' MAF (replaced within the last week) might be a bad (defective) MAF...other thoughts?

My wife now routinely just looks at me in disbelief and says, "Not working again!?...Why don't you just get rid of that thing?"

I can only say "We are so close to much trouble-free use. They ARE quirky, BUT when the old Volvos are running well, they are amazing!"

Please help save this brick so that I can prove to her (and lately, to me) that this is a car worth having...I'm having my doubts.
