Need advise about buying a 05 XC90 V8 AWD

Post by neworleans »

Hello everyone,

I am looking to get this suv for my wife but have no knowledge about these models. I read that some of these models have engine and transmission problems. It has got 98K miles, owner is asking 7500, it is in decent condition, i haven't driven it because I am pretty far, I am just trying to be cautious and would like to know as much as I can with your help and advise.

Thanks in advance...

I can't say I've seen one single post regarding a mechanical problem with these cars but that can be interpreted as rarity in sales.

I have a friend who owns one of these and he is very happy with the purchase. He says it has a six- speed trans. Have you tried looking at Carsurvey.org ??

I had a look at Carsurvey.org and found only about 6 people posting with that engine configuration. Looks like most people go for the T6 for extra power (who knows why, when gearboxes fail at that rate)

All of the V8 owners can't help themselves over how much they love their XCs.

The V8's have been very solid, as noted, you can be safe with about anything but a T6. That price and miles (depending on condition) is pretty decent, as with any volvo maintenance history/records is key. The other thing to note is that the engine is essentially the only difference between the 2.5 and V8. If you want the 8 for towing, it's not going to do you much better as tongue and total weight I think is the same.

That said, the V8 does have plenty of power and for a V8 SUV it gets really good MPG too...
