Timing Belt Question

Post by mpr3209 »

Changing the timing belt on my 2003 T4 S60. Have been following the youtube video step by step. It has gone pretty smooth thus far but today when I got the new belt on, the exhaust cam shaft sprocket had moved counterclockwise about a tooth or two. The intake sprocket is still lined up and the crankshaft is still lined up.

What should I do? In the video the mechanic gets the belt on the first time then says one of the sprockets has moved so he takes the belt off but he doesn't explain how he lines the sprocket back up, It just cuts to th next shot where he says the timing marks are lined up perfectly.

This is my first time doing a timing belt. Do I just take the belt off and rotate the one sprocket? Is there an easy way to do that? Any advice would be much appreciated.

you can move the cam sprocket forward a few ticks just be careful not to move it too far

it will require a good amount of force to get it to move at all but once it does break free it's real easy to turn, so you have to be extra careful not to turn it too far. I put a long screwdriver through some of the holes around the circumference of the sprocket to get leverage on it but I think there are better tools built for this purpose
