2000 S80 turbo trouble codes PO238, PO118 and PO452

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 S80 turbo trouble codes PO238, PO118 and PO452

Post by KurtS »

Hello,
I am a newbie here and have a couple of questions. My son limped home in our S80 with the CEL on and 3 trouble codes plus the STC (traction control) light on. Codes are below:

PO238 Turbo boost - sensor "A" circuit high input
PO118 Engine coolant temp circuit high input
PO452 Evap emissions control system - pressure sensor low

also the STC light is on.

My scan tool reads these codes but will not allow me to erase them. The car idles badly, runs very rough, will not accelerate and just runs very poorly. Also, the electric fan runs for some time after the engine is off. Could any of these codes be related, e.g., could the coolant temp sensor set off other codes? It seems cooicidental that the car would all of a sudden begin running poorly and all these things happened at once.

I know this is long - any help is appreciated, TIA

Kurt

Given the sudden symptoms I would say start by checking all of the vacuum lines. There are quite a few, including ones that go from the turbo control valve to a metal pipe which then splits into two pieces and finally changes back to a silicone hose at the wastegate end for each turbo. A sudden vacuum leak could\would explain the first and last codes as well as rough running. I had the 3" silicone hose at the wastegate actuator for one of the turbos break on mine and it badly affected running.

P0118 I guess you could start by reseating/excercising the connector for the temp sensor, its under the plastic cambelt cover near the VVT solenoid. It may also be afaulty sensor of course, I googled P0118 volvo and found this: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=10667
Its for older model volvos (p80s) but still would apply IMO.

STC light might require a Volvo scanner to pull the code for, or STC may be disabled while there is a turbo pressure code in the system?

I apreciate it Boosted!

I will check on all your points.

Its strange to have all codes all show at once. The STC isespecially puzzling. I use an indy who has a VADIS (or equivalent).

Thanks again.
