Bigger brakes 855 T5R 330HP

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Bigger brakes 855 T5R 330HP

Post by gmtgmt »

I have a friend who has a yellow one its BSR flashed ECU flashed, 3 inch exhurst, 19T turbo all the good goodies.
going 250kmh and one hard hit on the brake pedal and they are warped. lol the brakes are way too small

What good brake setups are great for this?

It needs to be stock looking so i have been looking into XC90 brakes have anyone done this?

Someone over at Volvospeed put together a brake kit using parts for an S40/V50, so it's entirely stock Volvo parts using 320 mm rotors. The only problem is he had to fabricate custom brackets. The whole thing should cost less than the Porsche kit but he reckons the Porsche kit will perform somewhat better.

The good news for you is the guy is located in the Netherlands, so maybe you can arrange something with him to source the brackets.

This is one of my favorite R's that's also located in the Netherlands. He's using Aston Martin DB9 calipers on the front and Porsche Cayenne calipers on the rear with S60R rotors. Seems like overkill but an interesting setup nevertheless.

I'm with you on the 850's brakes. They're not very good, especially for a performance car.

I've written here (somewhere) about the brakes on '04-'07 R cars, and how they started fading on a mountain drive through the twisties.

I thought the R brakes weren't quite big enough (they faded), so stock 850 brakes are far too small for any real performance workout. Here is the 850 302mm brakes upgrade writeup.

P2 R brakes have all the needed components but REAL brake linings.
Rotor swept area and caliper rigidity is there but the choice of pads to not have morning sickness and to be quiet leaves high speed performance lacking.
Brake noise just keeps pedestrians texting on their phones more alert.
When you fly and the jet's brakes get all noisy as they bring a hundred tons of aircraft to a stop do you worry about the noise or give thanks for the stop?

Another upside of squeaky brakes is that people look at you. If you're thinking about teal-blue wheels or a tri-level deck wing, or whatever silly visual to get attention, save your money and install squeaky pads.

On a more serious note, Jimmy, I agree with you on the squeaky brake thing. The downside is the attention, but I can't have it both ways. I personally have passed the age where the attention thing is a positive. That is left to the blue wheel/deck wing guys.

My brake pad philosophy:
  • Dust-free
  • Long life
  • Stopping power
Choose any two.

The rear pads on Volvos are usually guilty of the squealing.

They're not the best out there for stopping power I'm sure, but after repeated hard braking, I will say that the Akebono's are definitely better than the Volvo pads. That, and they've never squeaked or left much dust.

The Volvo ones fade dramatically during hard braking...so much so that I almost crashed when mine faded at a track. Never raced that car on a track again, but I did drive it hard on mountain roads, and even when they started smoking like crazy, the braking power was still there.

We just changed the rear brakes (OEM) a couple weekends ago, and the front (Akebono) ones have 40,000 on them and still about half the original pad left.

I've found some good brake pads with good bite.

Porterfield Racing pads in the R4-S compound. They are mainly a racing brake pad but the "-S" is the Street version
For high performance and heavy duty street conditions the Porterfield R4-S compound remains
a top performer in the realm of street/performance brake pads. With the R4-S compound
giving a friction level up to .41. This is an amazingly fast stopping brake pad. Simply put, they will
give you an impressive increase in stopping ability with very minimum amount of pedal effort.
Perfect for prolonged everyday street driving while also being capable of enduring the most severe
use without fade. It is also rotor friendly of course.
We have gone to great measures to ensure that the R4-S compound has the absolute lowest
noise and dust levels possible, far below O.E.M. equipment or any other high performance
brake material. The R4-S compound which has an overall win in the Baja 1000 is available for
most models of cars, trucks, and SUV’s. Superb stopping power under heavy use. Great for
occasional autocrossing, solo events, off road events and rallies. Perhaps one of the overall best
performing, clean and quiet everyday high performance driving brake pad ever made.
The R4-S compound is available for virtually any vehicle sold in the U.S. Also for rare
vintage cars and special applications for street touring.
They don't have them available for my 94 850 but I do have them on my Ford Exursion. Best stopping pads I've had on that truck by far.

I just did a search on their site and they don't have them for the earlier Volvos but they have them for some of the 98 and up.
