91 740 just died

Post by nisan17 »

Hi Group,

Last summer my 91 740 stopped running. After two months of trouble shooting I changed the CPS, cap, rotor ,the shop changed out the coil and the ignition amplifier, which was the supposed problem. So, tonight, two months later on on a two hour drive home in the rain, I hit a puddle going hwy speed and the car lost power. It seemed like it was to get going again, but just died. After coasting to a safe spot on the shoulder I cranked it several times...Sometimes it stumbled but wouldn't start. Then the battery died. Called a tow truck and towed it to a relative's house.

Any ideas what to look for?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

How deep was the puddle and how much of the engine electrics were soaked? This has been a common problem in the UK this year as we have had more than our fair share of rain and flooded roads.

Bill,
Quick question regarding the same car. The fuel pump under the car was found to have failed. Now, the car runs good and then out of no where just stalls. It starts and runs good, like nothing happened. I drove it all day Wednesday no problems...I mean, I let it run virtually all day because it was around zero degrees. Over this summer, I put new cap, rotor and wires in it.(because it it sometimes would quit in rain)n Haven't driven it in several months because we've acquired another vehicle. So, now it's winter and I want to recommission the olde Volvo to work horse duties again. What could possibly cause it to do this? I'm about ready to send it to a shop. Maybe your pointers can help expedite the healing process??!! Thanks much in advance.

Have you removed the distributor cap and clean and dried the inside?
Pulled the plug wires and cleaned and dried them and their connections?
What shape are the spark plugs in?

Are you saying that the car won't run now?
What happens when you try to start the engine?

It runs like a top. but just stalls. It starts by stumbling like running out of gas. It then starts right back up.
