850 Service Manual

Post by Shovelhead »

Can anyone make any recommendations on a service manual for the 1996 850 Turbo? I'm tired of flying blind. I am partial to a manual on CD but it's not necessary. I've seen Mitchell and Cylmers online for stupid prices. Guess like everyone else I'm looking for a deal.

Thanks

LOL let me count my troubles.

#1. I have a smoke problem, When I stop at lights I get a nice blue cloud of smoke coming form the exhaust, from what I've been able to figure out it's either the oil trap or the turbo seal. Witrh my luck it's the later. I did a compression test got 165lbs on the lowest cyl. and 175lbs on the highest one so it's in the acceptable range. Didn't see the need to do a wet compression test with good numbers like that. So with my luck I'm guessing it's a turbo seal. Dealer said oh about $3000 yeah right off to the junk yeard if thats the case.

#2. I have an intermitant A/C problem. Will work fine cold enought to hang meat in the back seat, then without warning it will start blowing out warm to hot air. So I discharged the system hoping it would be a clogged orifice tube. Nope clean as a whistle someone else thought it was the same thign becasue it was brand new.

#3. Intermitant Tracs/ABS lite on. I know thats the pc borad that has to be retrofited but not my biggest concern right now.

#4. Water leak on the passenger floor, I suspect it might be a clogged sunroof drain but my attention is diverted to the smoke issue.

Ah that about covers it for now.......lol What really frosts my cocanuts is I bought this car brand new and sold it to my sister at a break even price. She beat the living daylights out of it and insisted on taking it to a Vlovo dealr who had a reputation for being a RIP OFF ! I warned her repeatedly about not going to this J/O but she said oh but there so convienant. Yeha the convienatly libnerated thousands of dollars from your check book.
Not to mention the makeup stains through out the car, the torn carpet, cracked leather seats, missing body mouldings, rear spoiler held down with RUBBER CEMENT!!!!!!! Argh! and the numerous mismatched spot painted body panels from her various fender benders. I litterly cried when I saw the car. This was my baby she desecrated.........lol So I really want to try and get her back in shape but I'm dreading having to swap out the turbo.

Ok I'm done with my ranting.......lol

Gee aren't you glad you asked if I had any spesfic troubles with my car.......lol
Thanks for the tip I'll check out AZ tomorrow for a manual.

Your #1 and #4 problems may be related. Many times water under the passenger's side carpet, indicates a clogged drain hose for AC Evaporator.

AC Evaporator problems are very common with 850 and S70... Run a search here for other posts...

I got both the cylmer and haynes, and I recommend haynes. It's 850 specific so pics and info always relates. Cylmer packs to much info in the book covering all 2,7,8,9 series cars, so a lot of the book doesn't pertain or doesn't mention 850 differences. Plus off amazon I got the haynes, brand new, delivered to my door for a little over 18 dollars.

Since you have a '96 model, forget rebuilding the crummy 15G turbo. You can get a brand new 16T turbo that will bolt right up, straight outta Japan for $400. It'll give you a nice little boost in power too :D .

Sure. Price appears to have gone up a bit (exch. rate?) since last time I saw it, but it's still an excellent deal for a brand new turbo.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VOLVO-85 ... enameZWD1V

Hhhhmmm, on second look, buy it from the following link.

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... _Stores_IT

It's in Euro's, so as long as you have Paypal, it shouldn't be a problem and you can save $100.
