xc-70 m56 swap

Post by absolutezero273c »

Lately I've noticed a number of XC-70's that need a transmission. Has anyone successfully put a M56 into a 2001+ XC-70?
I've got a '94 850 with the M56 and found a 2002 XC-70 for sale in my area with only 124,000 miles.
I think that it will physically bolt in (might have issues with the slave cylinder) but has anyone found an answer for the ECU modifications and any other nuances?
I've seen these posts but haven't seen anything where someone has done a swap for these years (94-2002) and resolved the ECU mod or other issues.

The transmission will bolt up, but im
Not sure what the ecu requires to run properly on the p2 platform with a manual swap.
I converted my 850 turbo to a manual once, no experience with the newer v70's tho

Thanks for responding Japedo. I was doing some reading on that year and it looks like that year the S80 P2 made use of canbus for communications/controls. Not sure if the 2002 XC70 P2 does as well. I can't seem to find any info with a quick look but if it is anything similar then I would have to say all bets are off with using the M56. ...And I don't have the time to try to make it work.

Here's a quick write up on manual trans swap for P2 cars.... we've done a number of them lately so it's a pretty straight forward process. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =5&t=53702

If you keep your AWD however you'll need to source an M58 or M66, if you ditch the AWD then you can use the M56.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Lucky. Would there be any advantage to going with the M58 over the M66 or vice versa for strength or longevity reasons? Reason I ask is I own a Ford Excursion and had to rebuild the trans. While looking into my options I found that with each subsequent transmission model they have made for the SuperDuty chassis they have improved it. Just wonder if the same exists here. If not I figure it just comes down to availability.
