At a guess in is an Auto model and the trigger lever in the gear selector knob hasn't released fully (i.e. it is stuck in) you can flick this out then lube the trigger with a PTFE spray (I use GT85 but that is probably UK specific), mop up the residual fluid after spraying and working the trigger lever for a couple of minutes.
For a decent fix pull the auto selector knob off the shaft (it does simply pull upwards and off to remove it) then spray the GT85 spray down the shaft to lube the trigger from the inside out, I have just done this earlier tonight on my V70 and wifes V40, shame the gear sticks got swapped on refit to the cars as my V70 now has a wooden shift lever

The other common cause is a sticky shiftlock overide button.
It's that square button on the upper right of the shifter console.
They often get sticky one way or another, someone pushes it
and then it doesn't spring all the way back up.
WD-40...
Give it a squirt and work the sticky loose.
Both of these buttons associated with the shifter will
keep your key trapped if they don't fully release.

I've had this problem before... You probably think the shift interlock button is all the way up, but it is probably still a little lower than it is supposed to be. Here is what I would do if I was you:
1.) Lift the arm rest and look for the fuzz-covered cover, pry this up with a flat head screw driver. You'll see two 8mm bolts, remove them.
2.) Lift the parking brake lever, then put your fingers into the leather boot near the plastic surround and pull the cover towards the driver's door. Now pull the leather boot over the parking brake lever (take it off).
3.) Notice there are two white electrical connectors under where the cover was. Disconnect these.
4.) Pull up on the ashtray, and disconnect heated seat buttons (if you have them). Now the whole center consul can be lifted up and out.
4.) Underneath the shift interlock button push up with your finger.
5.) Now you can take the key out of the ignition.
6.) Use lubricant on the shift interlock button (I use oil to make sure it is good an lubed-up).
My sisters go to school in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the soil is really sandy (either that or they go to the beach way to much). Their cars get covered with sand (inside, outside - all over). My sister had grains of sand in her shift interlock button and this is what I did to fix it. This procedure takes just a few minutes once you've done it a few times

Are you sure that your shifter button is all the way pulled out? When the car is running and in park, you have to squeeze the shifter button to shift it out of park. Make sure that button is all the way out. Before you pull the center console you may want to pull the shifter knob off just to make sure the shifter button isn't stuck. It only takes about 15 seconds. Get over the shifter knob and grab it with both hands, you may want to open the sun roof so you will have head clearance. Once you have a good grip on the knob, jerk it up and off. To get it back on just slide it down on the shaft and give it a wack to lock it back down. Once the knob is off, if the key doesn't turn back and release take the console out and check things under there.
