drivers side mirror insert replacement

How do you remove the plastic insert (with broken glass) on the drivers side mirror for a 2004 S-80? The replacement part is $100 and comes with a couple of plastic tabs and electrical connectors.

There are three ball joints which snap into the back of the mirror. By applying force from behind with a large flatblade screwdriver it will pop out.
