Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 S80 T60 Ghost Messages

Post by rhondaarm »

On any given day the following messages will display.
STC NEEDS SERVICING, EMISSION SYSTEM NEEDS SERVICING, POWER STEERING NEEDS SERVICING AND BRAKE FAILURE STOP SAFELY ASAP. Now today POWER REDUCED STOP ASAP (1) and ENIGINE SYSTEM NEEDS SERVICING. Engine system servicing light remains on presently. When the Power reduced light came on and I pulled into a parking lot-car died would restart but not idle. Finally got it started to get it home. I have 54000 miles on the car. Have installed a new battery, new front brakes, STC sensors on each tire cleaned, oil has been changed. Dianogstics test shows ABS control unit and PNP part faulty. However; no one can/will assure me this ABS control unit will fix the "Ghosts" in my car. If anyone can help me before I have this car repaired or traded in I would welcome your input.

I have had the same problem since the summer with my 2000 S80-T6. I originally thought it was a power issue or an overheated computer. I changed the battery without relief.

For what it's worth, I've noticed the problem occurs most when the AC is on. However, I don't know if the issue is the extra power drain, the outside temp, or someting else all together.

Occasionally, most of the messages clear as mysteriously as they came--except for the STC warning. That is consistently the one that stays on until the car has been off for some time.

I took the car to the Volvo dealership a month ago. Of course, they treated me like I was just another idiot owner. They were unable to find any codes (as I suspected) except for the throttle body. After $1000+ to replace the throttle body, the codes still appear. They are less frequent now, but the weather is cooler. The last time they all came on was after I was running the kids around for over an hour-and-a-half.

I've hear rumors of the ABS computer being a common culprit, and then causing the ghost codes in the other computers. I'm wondering if my STC computer is going, as this is the only one that won't clear without the car cooling down.

Talked to a mechanic Friday-pretty sure my throttle body needs cleaning. This garage has worked on my other Volvo's in the past and they do a great job at third of the cost of the dealer. To clean will be $182.00. When this all started was in the heat of the summer also. Only real error code found was the abs module. However; everyone tells me you can drive without the ABS. There have been many complaints filed about many issues fromm 1999-2001. Some still remain safety issues of the mechanics. I'll see what happens today. I may even trade it in.

My S80 T6 had similar problems. The reason for mysterious messages was faulty ABS-control unit. I repaired it by myself, and after this all error- and warning messages were gone!

Rhonda,

It's a faulty ABS control module. Had the exact same codes and symptoms. I can honestly plug a guy on the left coast who has the expertise to remedy your problem. I'm not affiliated with him, just a satisfied customer of two years and counting! His name is Victor Rocha. I found him through Ebay. His username is "vicrocha" and usually runs an auction for his repair (ran $140 for me). Can't hurt to send him an email.

Hi Rhonda, I was just wandering if you had your ABS module fixed via Chapsticks recomendation? I live in Cabot, Ar and was also wandering who your great mechanic is, I may need him. Please let me know. Thanks neighbor!

I had about the same condition on my 99 S-80 the beginning of last year and the lights would come on one at a time and sometimes multiple lights and messages.
I was still under my volvo dealers warranty so I gave it to them and they said that it was the ABS module and the Control Module. which they replaced and I haven't had ANY problems since then. Volvo said that the ABS affects many other systems so give it to Volvo. The bill would have been $879.
Hope this helps.

this is similar to what i had happen a couple of months ago. My car would die and spit out a bunch of codes. Once i tried to restart the codes would disappear. I took it to the dealership, they replaced the throttle module (they couldn't find any codes or reproduce the stall). I drove it 2 miles and it stalled again. It got itstarted and right back to the dealership. I recommended checking the abs module per other posts. after them haveing my car for the evening, it stalled on them. They were boggled, so they said they called the national support and they recommended a software upgrade. they upgraded at no charge seeing how it took them a few times to repair it. Since then, no problems. The upgrade is normally a $65.00 charge. This dealership here in San Antonio treated me very well. Loaner cars and the whole nine,,,except a car wash.
