Almost total loss of power

D5, parked at work. On leaving brought the car to about 40mph as normal, heard a pop from the from of the car and all at once:

1. Almost complete loss of drive, high revs producing only 30mph top speed
2. 'Engine system service required message' on the dash
3. Engine noise is now accompanied by noticeable wooshing sound from engine area.

The engine seems to run fine, just isn't doing very much in terms of drive.

Any ideas?

Thinking about it, revs OK ish, but no drive. Could that mean a clutch related issue?
