Lending my volvo- advice?

Post by VA_Brown »

Ok here is the deal. My job is moving me out of state to work on a job for 5 months. I will be supplied with a work truck while there. I have two vehicles (and a motorcycle). I would like to leave my volvo 'home' and move down there with my tahoe and trailer (which will be filled with my belongings and my horse!
My volvo is a 1998 s70 with 140K. I don't want to sell it because #1 I own it, #2 it gets way better mileage than my tahoe, and #3 I like it! During the 5 months I am gone I don't want it sitting around doing nothing. I ma planning on storing it at the parking garage at my work office. I asked a co-worker if she would maybe drive it a couple times a month to keep it going. She agreed to that. But she (smartly) wanted me to write up some sort of agreement.

The car is insured in my name, but I don't have any collision on it and most things I wouldn't bother to fix on the car. The car is basically worthless as far as sale value- book book is like $1k, but the car has some issues that wouldn't allow it to pass inspection in many states. My coworker is perfectly responsible and there is always the chance an accident could occur.
Any advice on what to write up?

Park it. Disconnect the battery. Leave it parked.

For 5 months, I wouldn't worry about it. Use normal storage procedures, change oil, fill the tank etc and let it sit. I have cars that sit all winter and with nearly nothing done to them, start right up in the spring. Note, I do use a spray fogging oil before starting, remove each plug, clean it, spray a quick spritz of the fogging oil inside the cylinder and re-install the plug. On my antique, I remove the center plug wire and crank until the oil gauge moves then fire it up.
Barring that, have a lawyer write up an agreement, probably cost more than the car's worth :-)

Yup, disco the battery.

Agreed - just park it.

We had a Buick that sat for 3 years without being touched. Cranked up and ran with no issues for another 4 years before we sold it.
