1999 Turbo S70 Throttle Body cleaning

Post by wolf »

ok, I have a 1999 Turbo S70 with 72,000 miles. In the last few weeks this problem has been getting worse and worse, my rpm's have been hunting about 500 rpms up whenever i am stopped, or breaking at a slow speed, it even pushes me a little forward as if I were lightly pressing the accelerator (it kinda sounds like i am reving my engine at idle). My local Volvo mechanic and many people on the forum seem to say that cleaning the Throttle Body is the main cure for this problems. I am not the most knowledged car person, but I am willing to learn this to save me a bit of labor costs at the volvo mechanic. I know there are a few little tutorials on the site for cleaning without turbo volvos, but everyone says that it is a bit different for turbos. If anyone is nice enough and has the time to help me out on this one, I would greatly appreciate it, I would just take it to the mechanic, but I am between jobs and just dropped a good bit of money on hospital bills and medicine for an injured knee a few weeks ago. Thank you so much in advance.

Yes, you are correct.

To see how cleaning it can buy time, see this thread and look for a guest who comments look like this:
Day 96 here after 2nd quickie cleaning (w/o removing TB from engine). Still OK.

Hmm... Are you sure you read that is a cure for your particular problem, the "96 day still OK" guy cleaned his 'cause he would stall out while declerating (coming to a stop or slowing down to turn, etc.). If your model has an ETM (TB is part of), you need to look under that hood harder to find it... (hope that doesn't sound too harsh, maybe under/part of the Turbo?) That last poster's link may show you where it is located better, but I couldn't get that link to connect...)
