I was going to purchase vida, however once you do the videos shows the setup links to the internet? is this true and if so what does it link to. I dont want to purchase the vida if it requires internet all the time as sometimes i'm not within internet access if I need it .
thanks,
VIDA - does it require a constant internet connection?

Unless you are actually buying the real deal it won't do anything with the internet anyway other than pitch you into a login screen. On the cracked bootleg copies you just ignore it.
The installation is an 8 gB .iso file so you will either need a dual layer DVD burner or a virtual DVD like "gizmo" to get it to install.

You can mount an ISO with something like Virtual Clonedrive. The application requires Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate, 32 bit only. It is web based, but it runs a java-based web server locally on your PC. It also installs a local SQL server that hosts gigabytes of data. 2GB+ of RAM is required. It is somewhat slow and resource intensive. It only seems to work right with IE8, IE9 results in page rendering issues.
Best bet is to dedicate a decent laptop to it.
Has anyone successfully linked to a car with a DICE interface? I see there are various aftermarket ones available.

I have many times, and also downloaded lots of software updates, etm,ecm cem, etc. Never had a problem, but you need to realize that to download software you need to dwnload a Volvo Vida subscription, go to volvotechinfo for the information on how it works,
Also,on occasion it canbe a bit tricky todownload the diagnostic software on your pc, best OS for that is Win 7 Pro x86,or x64, I have done a few installs for people that weren't very PC savvy. Good Luck.

On the cracked bootleg copies distributed with the Dice clones no. However these are 'old versions' of VIDA and you will be locked out of downloading/updating/reloading vehicle software. This includes key transponder and remote fob programming.
If you need to do programming you will have to acquire/install a legitimate copy of the current version of VIDA with a paid subscription. Not all DICE clones will provide full functionality with VIDA. It seems to hinge on how the DICE was built: internal components/ability to hold/update to the current device firmware from Volvo. Also note that a 'good' dice can be used as a generic J-2534 pass through device which can be plugged into and read non-Volvo vehicles (2004+) with various diagnostic software such as torque, scanxl, obdwiz, etc. Vida software is Volvo specific.

The aftermarket clones can download software to Volvos however not through the bootleg Vida software. Of course we can read and clear fault codes from all modules with the bootleg Vida software.
There are 2 forum members here, Doublebug and Yagger, that have their own software that allows this.
Doublebug and I have programmed hundreds of ETMs for the Aussie market as well as a handful of ECMs and CEMs. We've also done passenger and driver's door modules (window switch boards or PDM/DDM) all with just an internet connection, a Dice, some comms software (Skype or Viber) and their connection software.
I don't see what they use on their end however when a car is read over the 'net Henry can see VIN and all fault codes and he can program modules or clear them. He obviously can also erase and reprogram them. A handy guy to know.
