Engineers at the Koenigsegg design centre talk about their new camshaftless free valve design and a little further in the video have already developed a prototype

Formula 1 cars have been using that technology for years. A couple of years ago the FIA imposed a 20,000 RPM limit on the engines. Once the camshafts and valve springs were eliminated there really is no physical limit to how many RPMs the engines could turn thus the Rules committee set the limit itself.

I remember some rather high profile hiccups in the early days like emergency, late race, pit stops to re-pressurize the air tank that actuated the valves.

Formula one used to be such a hotbed of innovation but the rules have forced them all to a common ECU and common engine mapping firmware. It really is a shame that you now need to design an engine around the ECU rather than designing an engine and then optimizing the firmware to get the most out of your design.
