2001 XC70 Can someone tell me what it might be worth?

Post by lindacork »

Hi, I'm new here, so please let me know if I am breaching site etiquette posting in this section.

I have a 2001 XC70 that I'm trying to sell. It has issues - a bad transmission, which I gather is not surprising, and it needs a new front suspension. It's got a lot of miles on it, between 188,000 and 190,000. The body and interior are in pretty good shape, I'd say normal wear and tear. I just put new tires on it a few months back, and got the breaks done even more recently.

I need to sell it, and I have no idea what a fair price would be. One person has told me to ask $1500 for it, the "We Buy Cars" companies have offered anywhere between $275.00 and $400.00. I had one interesting character call me and offer me $750 when I listed it on Craigslist, and told me to take it off line, but then backed out when I called to arrange to meet him. So at this point, I'm more bewildered than anything else about what is both fair and realistic in terms of price for this car.

I'm in Northern Virginia, and would love some advice on how to go about selling the nicest car I've ever owned - or even a legitimate buyer for the car, someone who can either use the parts that are good or who has the know-how to make this car road-worthy again without breaking their bank account.

I have always donated my cars to charity, but this time, I'm not in a position to give it away if it will bring a few dollars so I can get my other car fixed. So any thoughts or suggestions that anyone can give me, would be much appreciated.

Thanks much.

Transmission cost $3500-$5000
2001 XC70 with 190K miles in GOOD condition, worth maybe $3995 TOPS, retail private party.
Please do the math
The $300-$500 is correct (for parts).
Sorry

Don't be sorry. That's about what I'm getting, so I feel pretty good about that now.

I really appreciate your taking the time to respond. I had someone tell me $1500, and I just couldn't imagine how that was possible, and then a kind of crazy-sounding guy offered $750, and that seemed a little too good to be true.

So you actually kind of made my day. Thanks.

They were worth 1500 with a blown tranny a few years ago with under 140K miles when they were worth more in general and were younger and better cars

Good luck Linda. Don't forget to tell prospectives that you have to arrange visits around your SO mixed martial arts competitions to keep the creeps away....

Thanks abscate! The folks on this site are awesome. Wish I could have fixed the car, but it isn't within my means now, fortunately it was at my Volvo dealer and they were very nice about letting me leave it there until I could sell it to someone. I got $400 for it, about as much as I could have hoped for I guess. It's way better than having to pay someone to haul it away. :)
